Donor Spotlight: Roger Day

Donor and Y member

I belonged to the Uptown Minneapolis Y for years. For me, it was a place to work out—nothing more, nothing less. When my wife and I moved to Duluth nine years ago, I joined the Downtown Duluth Y—again, simply to work out.

Three years ago, my world was turned upside down when my wife died unexpectedly. Two years later, I had open-heart surgery. I began to feel a growing need for other people, if I was to have a full life in the time I have remaining. I found those people at the Y.

The staff members: Anthony and Eli at the membership desk. Kathy, who has an office nearby, always says hello. Jonny, the fitness center director with his megawatt smile. Sara, who sends me a holiday "we care" food package each year.

The members: I've made friends with Jim, who took me to the cities for a medical appointment, and brought me food while I was convalescing. Dave, with whom I have meaningful conversations over breakfast. In the locker room, John and Dan joke with me. Mike—Mr. Hockey—is my Cross Ramp partner. Sue is my rowing machine partner. And John—Mr. XC skier—Dewey, Lindsey, Dick, Bob, Chris...

I started going to the Y because it's good for my body. I continue to go because it's good for my soul.
